MtGColorPie, Article - For Players Who Enjoy Banning and New Cards → gatheringmagic.com

On Tuesday night of last week, there were some minor shakeups to the Banned List. No, I’m not talking about Legacy/Modern/Extended (Do people still play that?), but to Commander. (Side rant: I’ve been writing “Commander,” because that’s what the new name of the format is called, but it’s still the same format. Yes, I still call it EDH—and Generals—but I’ve adopted the new slang. Of course, I still mention “Type 2,” and I “summon creatures,” so there’s that. I get why some people think that the format has sold out because of the Commander products, but that’s just silly. EDH/Commander is growing, and we’re all reaping the benefits.)

He also takes a look at what cards in Innistrad are ones to watch out for! Read more across the jump.

How does cascade work with commanders in EDH? For example, if Bloodbraid Elf was your commander, and she dies, would playing her again trigger cascade at 4 converted mana cost or 6?

Bloodbraid couldn’t be your Commander because she isn’t Legendary. There are no Legendary Creatures with Cascade.

That said, you’d only cascade for 3 CMC or less. The Commander “Tax” doesn’t affect the CMC of the spell.

If i have Cream of the Crop and Garruk's Packleader on the board and I cast a creature, which ability would resolve first? Could I look at the top X cards of my library, put one on top, and then draw that card? I was told today that is "not how it works".

Assuming it’s power is 3 or greater:

You get to pick how you want to resolve the effects since you are the controller of said effects. So, to do so, you put Packleader’s effect first, Cream of the Crop second. Cream of the Crop resolves, then you can draw it with Packleader’s effect.

603.3b If multiple abilities have triggered since the last time a player received priority, each player, in APNAP order, puts triggered abilities he or she controls on the stack in any order he or she chooses. (See rule 101.4.) Then the game once again checks for and resolves state-based actions until none are performed, then abilities that triggered during this process go on the stack. This process repeats until no new state-based actions are performed and no abilities trigger. Then the appropriate player gets priority.

does wooden stake kill the vampire before they do damage or anything before they die?

Before the vampire can do damage it will die if it blocked or became blocked by the Wooden Stake wielding creature. Poof! Ash.

If you have 2 counterbalances and a rhystic study on the field and an opponent plays a spell without paying the mana, can you choose the order the enchantments activate in, so use counterbalance, rhystic study, counterbalance, to get two chances to counter it?

You control the effects in how they happen, since you control the abilities on those permanents. Stack it up!

613.6. Within a layer or sublayer, determining which order effects are applied in is usually done using a timestamp system. An effect with an earlier timestamp is applied before an effect with a later timestamp.

On of the more complicated aspects of Magic in my opinion…

Time stamping only occurs on online play, not paper. When factory is made into a creature, states are checked by Humility. Since at that time the creature is a 2/2, it will become a 1/1 and loose its ability to pump another assembly worker. Blocks happen, and since both crearures will trade, your oppenent’s creature dying will make you loose your bridge

Timestamp happens in Magic. Period. Doesn’t matter which one (since both use the same rules). The effect that happened last takes over from my understanding.

If I had two Mossbridge Trolls on the battlefield and tapped two 5/5 creatures, would both Mossbridge Trolls get amped?

No. Remember, when a card refers to itself by name, it means that specific permanent and not permanents with that same name (unless stated otherwise).

Incorrect, actually. Because of the way layers and timestamping work, Factory actually makes itself a 2/2 and stays that way until end of turn, altho it does lose it’s abilities. -Jack, L1 Judge

Oooohhhhh. Time stamps (the bane of my life as I study MtG rules). Yup, that’ll make it a 2/2. So your creature will die, giving you a zombie.

If I block a creature with my Engulfing Slagwurm, does it take any damage? Also, what part of the trun does Annihilator take effect?

Not normally no. It OMM NOMS the other creature before anything else happens normally.

It happens as soon as all of the attackers have been declared. So, just before blockers are declared. This makes it so that the person defending has even less to defend with or very few lands to come back with.

Oddest place you've played Magic?

I’ve heard stories of midnight Taco Bell and Denny’s runs. Where have you played? If possible, post up pics!

So let's say I had a Simic Initiate on field and I cast Simic Sky Swallower. Can I still use the Initiate's Graft ability to move the +1/+1 counter from him to the Swallower even though it has shroud?

Yup! Graft says “move a +1/+1 from this creature to another creature,” and Shroud doesn’t prevent that (it prevents targeting).

I'm playing dredge, and my opponent as Humility out. He activates Mishra's factory to be a 2/2 creature and attacks. I block with my nether shadow to prevent the damage. Does the factory die? He is claiming it does, and says I need to remove my Bridges from Below.

Yup. Factory would die because Humility makes it a 1/1. If Bridge from Below is in your GY, then yes you have to exile it because a creature enter your opponent’s GY.

lunchbizzle:

Today marks my Magic: the Gathering birthday!  It was officially a year ago today that I went to my very first formal event (Scars of Mirrodin Pre-release), and I have since then fallen in love with this hobby.

I had learned to play over the summer with a friend..

Cheers!

bananatrongo replied to your post: Can I have a deck with more than 60 cards? If so, am I able to play with a deck like this at pro tour?

To add; You need to control your draws the best you can, which requires you have the lowest possible number of cards. You can’t create a deck with a real strategy if you can’t consistently get the cards you need.

This. =) It’s why Caw-Blade was so good (the ability to search for your pieces to lock down the table).

Yes. Yes (but not advisable unless you’re doing Battle of Wits).

If I were to Volition Reins a Planeswalker that was played and activated on my opponents last turn, would I be able to activate one of the Walker's abilities this turn?

Yes. You control it now. =3 Happy stealing.
