Q:So, I never knew about this whole redirection effect with Planeswalkers before... Does this mean that, say, if I wanted to attack a Planeswalker, I would have to declare attackers, then my opponent declares blockers, THEN I choose to redirect damage to the Planeswalker? Or can I simply say something like "My creatures swing at X Planeswalker"?
Oh no. Combat assigns as if the Planeswalker were another player. “These creatures swing at you, these ones swing at that Planeswalker you control.”
It was hard for me to understand too. I used to think that I could let Planeswalkers take the hits for me! xD

Like I said, needlessly confusing.

it basically means that for a spell or ability to target a planeswalker you have to be able to target the controlling player as well. so things like leyline of sanctity also protect your ‘walkers.
