Q:So what would you call Duels of The Planeswalkers and the like? Expansions, right? I'm new to TCGs so could you kind of explain the hierarchy of the cards

Duels of the Planeswalkers is a video game that includes many of Magic 2013’s (a core set, where many cards are reprinted and some new) cards. An expansion is something like Return to Ravnica, in which many new cards are made, some are reprinted, and there is a story line involved. Special sets - like Duel Decks: Venser vs Koth, Planechase, and Archenemy - are special decks in which they are styled after a theme with reprints of new cards. Some special sets, like Planechase, Archenemy, and Commander, include new cards meant specifically for the format. Promo cards are not sets, but individual cards given or earned during an event for players. This can include alternate foiled art for existing cards, incentive for buying product by getting a special limited edition foiled art, and even judge rewards with extra rare foiled cards.
