A Texas intellectual property firm has filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Wizards of the Coast—but, intriguingly, not parent company Hasbro—alleging that Magic: The Gathering’s online version violates patents it holds on a video game you’ve probably never heard of.
Hello everyone. The Magic Online Wide Beta has been up and running for more than three weeks now (if you haven’t heard about the Wide Beta, read Ryan Spain’s articlefrom September 4) and I just wanted to give you all an update on our development progress and what is in store for the next few weeks. Before we get into the update, however, I want to thank all of you who have downloaded the Magic Online Wide Beta and shared your thoughts with us, whether it has been on Twitter, on the forums, or through the new feedback form. This interaction is critical as we work to deliver the best possible Magic Online experience possible.
Even with all the input we have received, however, I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for players to continue to check out our progress and tell us how we are doing. We have received a lot of feedback, both positive and negative, and we have already used it to adjust design and development priorities, whether through validating design decisions or identifying problem areas that need immediate attention. As we make additional changes or add new features, this discussion with our players becomes even more important.
If this effort is going to be collaborative, however, we need to make sure that we share information as well, so players can stay up to date on what is happening with the Wide Beta. So without further ado…
The Planeswalker format takes a step in that direction by giving new players a bunch of cards that they can use to build decks and test the waters in the New Player room. Since the cards are not tradable, we don’t have to worry about limiting the rarity of cards in the Planeswalker Deck Packs and can give players access to powerful spells and creatures, some of which they may already be familiar with from either previous experiences in paper or playing other Magic games. The Planeswalker format, however, only lets those players dabble in constructed; it does not introduce new players to the awesome play experiences that limited formats, both booster draft and sealed deck, have to offer.
Congratulations to the Magic Online Community Team, victors in this year’s Community Cup. A strong showing in Standard on Friday slammed the door on any hopes of a Wizards comeback, meaning the Erik “Hamtastic” Friborg Memorial Trophy stays in the hands of the Community!

Magic Online turns nine years old on June 20 and we can’t think of a better way to kick off an Anniversary Celebration than with the 2011 Community Cup. Starting June 15 we will offer several ways for you to celebrate nine great years of MTGO. The Anniversary Celebration will last until June 29.
The Magic Online 9th Anniversary Celebration will consist of the following:
