Upon further review, I bring you…
Things every magic player should know:
(Note, not all of these are beginner techniques, but you should know everything on this list. if you don’t, ask somebody (Me, ihititwithmyaxe, mtgfan)
- Legend rule. planeswalker rule.
- Play the bare minimum amount of cards allowed in a format (unless Battle of Wits, in which case hate yourself).
- Deathtouch+trample.
- Priority and you.
- The Stack
- Activated, triggered, and mana abilities.
- Difference between cost and effects AKA what the fuck is a colon.
- Why casting most instants on your turn is wrong.
- If you don’t understand something, ask about it, ignorance is a choice.
- Counterspells
- Misplays happen to everyone, but only good players don’t repeat the same mistakes
- The Stack
- How to bait and not get baited with counterspells.
- Casting spells main phase 1 vs main phase 2
- Some spells in magic are bad. I mean really bad. If I card REQUIRES 3 others to make it decent, don’t. (Goblin Rally+Goblin Electromancer+ Fervor+ Intangible Virtue)
- When to Alpha Strike (if relevant to you)
- Hate the player, not the color blue
- You don’t need lots of money to play in a competitive format, but it sure can help (Steam Vents kicks the shit out of Izzet Guildgate)
- Netdecking doesn’t make a bad player. Playing poorly does.
- Sportsmanship, tabletalk, and overall etiquette (This varies more from store to store, but there are general rules everyone should follow)
- SIDEBOARDING
- Bluffing.
- The Stack
- Steps and phases of a turn
- Keyworded abilities
- RTFC
There’s a ton more, but this is enough to turn you into a better player.
