The Vampires of Innistrad Part 1
Long ago in Innistrad a famine was killing off many humans. There was just not enough food to go around and Edgar Markov decided to find a solution. Edgar was an alchemist, but the situation was so dire he resorted to making a deal with a demon. The demon Shilgengar taught him the secrets of blood magic and Edgar developed a ritual that would change the face of Innistrad. Edgar performed the ritual on himself becoming the first vampire in Innistrad. Afterwards he performed the ritual on his grandson Sorin Markov, the trauma caused Sorin’s planeswalker spark to ignite.
Vampires on Innistrad are weak to fire and living wood. Vampires are repelled by silver, because their reflection is quite horrible for them to view. The moon on Innistrad is made of silver and a full moon reflected in water will also repel vampires, they will not travel across bodies of water at night when the moon is full.
Edgar sired many vampires and twelve vampire bloodlines are known to have existed. Of the twelve, three completely died off and five are very small in number. The remaining four make up the majority of the vampires in Innistrad, they are Markov, Falkenrath, Stromkirk and Voldaren.
Markov
Progenitor - Edgar Markov, an alchemist looking for a solution to a famine
Markov vampires are very widespread in Innistrad. While most vampire families stick to the mountains of Stensia, Markovs can be found anywhere from Kessig to Gavony. The Markov bloodline is possibly the largest of all the vampire bloodlines since they sire so many new vampires. Elder Markov vampires have been known to excel in psychic magic.
Markov Quotes
Markov Patrician Vampires of the Markov bloodline pride themselves on their exquisite taste in fashion, art, and “wine of the vein.”
Uncanny Speed “To survive, we must embrace the savagery we knew in our race’s infancy.”
—Edgar Markov
Stromkirk
Progenitor - Runo Stromkirk, once a high priest to an ancient god of the sea
Stromkirk vampire do not like the politics of the Stensia vampires and they do not keep any manors or castles there. Stromkirk vampires are almost exclusively found in the coastal region of Nephalia. Stromkirk vampires are excellent at glamer and disguising magic and often interact with the humans of Nephalia. Some Stromkirk vampires are even said to be able to turn to mist.
Runo Stromkirk made himself quite the local patron of arts and shipping and his descendants have followed in his footsteps making Nephalia very prosperous. Runo’s motivation for his patronage wasn’t altruistic though. He funded any art projects and ship building that meant the local forest would be depleted. Thus there are no trees in Nephalia today, and no living wood stakes for vampires to fear.
Stromkirk vampires treat their prey with care. When a human with good tasting blood is found, they are kidnapped and taken to one of the Stromkirk manors. There they live a life of luxury, albeit in bondage and having their blood sucked often.
Stromkirk Quotes
Stromkirk Captain “No longer can we allow our human populations to be mindlessly slaughtered by ghouls. Slay all who trespass.” —Runo Stromkirk

Planeswalker Stockings!
So the story behind these is that an old coworker of mine was rediscovered many years later and opened a tabletop gaming store with food in Minnesota called Your Mom’s Basement. The place rocks!! The fact that he’s gone so far as to open his own business and such is hugely inspiring so I keep wanting to make things for the place. He requested, for Christmas, a set of Christmas stockings to decorate the store’s fireplace with from Magic the Gathering. He gave me the character names and here’s what I came up with ^_^
“Can I please go see the Helvault? Pretty please?!”
mystic-mundane Request! Sorin & Avacyn having a father/daughter moment!
Enjoy!
On the world of Innistrad, humans have always been pawns. For the mighty vampire families, humans are the source of blood and the foundation of their power. For the werewolf packs, humans are prey. For the ghouls and ghosts of the plane, humans are reminders of lives gone by, the despised living to be hunted and terrified. And for demons and devils, humans are targets for their hatred and torment.
Sorin was among the first generation of vampires created on Innistrad. He saw how his kind spread over the plane, feeding on and ultimately diminishing the populace. He argued for restraint, but the other vampire families resented his intrusion. Unknown to his kin, however, Sorin was a Planeswalker. He traveled the Multiverse searching for a solution to the grave situation on his home plane. Ultimately, he created the archangel Avacyn, a protector that would watch over the humans of Innistrad and serve as the symbol of hope. Thousands of years later, Innistrad is still afflicted with monstrous creatures, but thanks to Sorin’s intervention, the Avacynian Church continues to lend its protection to the world’s humans.
The fiendish mage Tibalt was born human, but immediately showed a predilection for inflicting pain. When a dark invocation caused his essence to be merged with infernal devils of Innistrad, his Planeswalker spark was ignited. He was free to traverse the Multiverse looking for new unfortunates to torment, but the innocent people of his native Innistrad were always his favorite victims.
Sorin, with his long-sighted, vampiric perspective, knows that humanity may lose its tenuous grip on survival if Innistrad’s monstrous forces hunt too recklessly. The young pain-mage Tibalt, on the other hand, respects no authority but his own vicious whims. As they clash, neither will tolerate anything but the utter defeat of his foe. Who will prevail is up to you.
